Using the right tool will create professional results in your home, especially when it comes to a painting project. But you might be wondering, should you use a roller or a sprayer? What kind of tool will work the best painting around corners?

Rollers

Rollers cover a lot of surface area quickly. Consider using them if you plan on covering a wall or a ceiling, because they'll not only make the job go by faster but they'll also add texture to these spaces.

Rollers can also be a great choice for painting any large piece of furniture, like a dresser or entertainment console.

Roller covers are typically available in 3/16 – ¼-inch, 3/8 – ½-inch, ¾ – 1-inch and 1 ¼ – 1 ½-inch thickness.

Brush

If you want control in a tight area, use a paintbrush. They are perfect for cutting corners or painting around trim. Just like rollers, the size of the brush used is based on the size of the space you're painting.

Paintbrushes with angled bristles provide more control for cutting in and painting window sash.

And brushes come with different types of bristles. Natural-bristle brushes are designed for oil-based paints, varnishes, and shellac. You'll also find a blend of polyester and nylon brushes that work well for latex paints.

Foam Brush and Roller

Sometimes, you may want to use foam instead of a brush. Often, bristles leave streaks behind and can be pulled off the brush and get stuck on the wall. A foam brush leaves a smooth finish without the concern of loose bristles.

A foam roller is ideal for smooth surfaces and performs well with gloss and semi-gloss latex paint.

Sprayer

When you have a project that seems daunting in size even for a roller, like the outside of a home, use a paint sprayer.

Keep in mind that overspray from a sprayer can drift, so be sure to move or cover items like cars or boats.

Paint Pad

Here's another tool without bristles that can get into tight, narrow spaces. What's great about these pads is some come built with wheels, allowing you to glide around the edges of trim very easily.
